Ranja Hautamäki works as Associate Professor in Landscape Architecture. She is a landscape architect and gained a doctor of science degree in 2016. Her professorship is landscape planning and society, emphasizing the societal and cultural dimension of landscape architecture. Ranja works with sustainable urban landscape planning and management with a special interest in two topics: planning discourses and practices. In her recent research she has studied the conceptions of nature and welfare and how these are translated into planning and materialized in landscape architecture. As to planning practices, her recent funded projects on nature-based solutions have aimed to examine and develop planning practices and tools to tackle societal challenges related to climate change, well-being and biodiversity.

Ranja Hautamäki has worked as the head of the green planning unit at the City of Tampere in 2004-2017. Earlier she worked as a consultant and as a teacher at Helsinki University of Technology. Ranja Hautamäki has an extensive experience in landscape planning, strategic planning and administration in the municipal sector. Her artistic references include strategic green structure plans, e.g. needs assessment of the national urban park in Tampere, restoration of historical parks such as the National landscape of Tammerkoski, and design of urban open spaces. Ranja completed her dissertation on urban manor landscapes in Helsinki (2016) as the first landscape architect at Aalto University.
