I am Executive-in-Residence at Aalto University. I currently lead Aalto's Scaling for Global Growth in Software preparation project as well as Aalto's Joint Health Area projects via Aalto Networking Platform. I was earlier the director of both Aalto Health Platform, a business & tech institute of about 100 professors, and of the innovation organization Aalto Health Factory.
I am strongly active in the software and healthcare industries both at Aalto and more broadly.
By professional background, I am a business executive whose experience includes division/P&L-wide responsibility for several global functions, processes and Must-Win Battles. I have experience in high-growth B2C and B2B environments alike, and also have experience in private equity and other investing in software products and services, incl. eCommerce, AI, Cloud and fintech, we well as biotech and further sectors.
My career orientation is to work with the growing business of software companies (notably, SaaS), both in academia and via consulting and advisory work.
Industry expertise: software products, eCommerce, healthcare, finance, mechanical engineering, energy and biotech.
I have mostly worked with products and services based on SW, EE and Mechanical Engineering technologies. Some usual themes and approaches to my work are Product-Led Growth, seeking AI/ML/data-analytics- and 5G/IoT/Industry 4.0/Cloud-based growth, internationalization, and effective management processes and organization.
Functional experience: strategy and product strategy, business development and sales, M&A, service delivery, and business process development.
Geographical experience: I have worked in Finland, the US, the UK, and Norway. I know also e.g. the Chinese, Indian and some other business environments and cultures, and EU environments broadly.
Prior to Aalto, I worked for Wärtsilä Corporation e.g. as Director and the Head of the Business Development globally for the groupwide Services P&L (net sales ca. EUR 2bn; 11500 personnel; 70 residence countries, 100+ sales countries). Before that in 2008-2010, I was in private equity as Director, Business Development for the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra.
Before that, I was a chaired Professor of Software Product Development and Head of the Center for Software Business and Engineering at the University of Turku since 2007. I was also Director of the Product Laboratory at Turku Center for Computer Science.
I was also in the early 2000s e.g. the Software Business Research Director at Helsinki University of Technology, and worked at also Morgan Stanley (London), Stanford University, the Wharton School, New York University, and in 2017 UC Berkeley, mostly with software business, growth strategy, and investments research.
I am a former Business Fellow and Junior Fellow of the Finnish Business and Policy Forum (EVA) and an Academy of International Business Haynes Prize recipient.
I am a board member at the Health Capital Helsinki innovation alliance (www.healthcapitalhelsinki.fi). My hobbies are sports, reading and culture and I live in Tapiola, Espoo, Finland.
