I am Executive-in-Residence at Aalto University. I currently lead Aalto's Scaling by M&A Growth project, Aalto M&A Forum, and Aalto's Global Business Dynamics area development and joint Health area projects. I was earlier the director of both Aalto Health Platform, a business and technology institute of about 100 professors, and of the innovation organization Aalto Health Factory.
I am strongly active in developing business in a set of industries central for me, both via Aalto's R&D and in corporate life. By professional background, I am a business executive, a PE investor, a consultant, and a professor.
My corporate experience includes division-wide responsibility for several functions. I have high-growth experience also from Private Equity and other investing in the engineering, high tech, healthcare, and further sectors. My primary work orientation is in helping grow, transform, and otherwise develop business, including studying these processes empirically (incl. importantly via M&A, a key focus area for me).
Often-recurring themes in my work are M&A; leveraging AI/ML for advanced data analytics; 5G/IoT/Cloud; international business; the Platform and the Subscription Economy; and effective processes.
Functional experience: strategy, M&A, business development and sales, product and services management, and process development.
Geographies: I have worked in Finland, US, UK, and Norway. I know also the Chinese, Indian and some other environments and cultures, and broadly those in the EU.
Prior to Aalto, I worked for Wärtsilä Corporation e.g. as Director and the Head of the Business Development globally for the groupwide Services P&L (net sales ca. EUR 2bn; 11500 personnel; 70 residence countries, 100+ sales countries). Before that in 2008-2010, I was in private equity as Director, Business Development for the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra.
Before that, I was a chaired Professor of Software Product Development and Head of the Center for Software Business and Engineering at the University of Turku since 2007. I was also Director of the Product Laboratory at Turku Center for Computer Science. I was also in the early 2000s e.g. the Software Business Research Director at Helsinki University of Technology.
I also worked in 2003-2017 at various times at Stanford, the Wharton School, New York University, and UC Berkeley, e.g. to study private equity investments.
Earlier, I worked at Morgan Stanley in London. I was Business Fellow of the Finnish Business and Policy Forum (EVA, 2009-2010) and an Academy of International Business Haynes Prize awardee.
