I am a design researcher working across the interrelated domains of eco-social regeneration and food systems transitions. My practice-based research seeks to connect stakeholders across (food-oriented) design, research, and practice who are interested in experimenting with co-creative methods to foster regenerative, more-than-human futures. At Aalto, I'm a postdoctoral research fellow working for the CreaTures (Creative Practices for Transformational Futures) project where I lead the Laboratory of experimental artistic productions. I have co-founded several food & design research initiatives, including Feeding Food Futures, Uroboros, HotKarot, and Fermentation GutHub. I publish my work regularly—for a full list see my Google Scholar. While I’ve spent some time in academic design research training, I find it essential to stay connected to everyday more-than-human worlds and their diverse creatures. I eat, cook, perform and present at art/design festivals, gallery exhibitions, community gardens, hackerspaces, various kitchens, and random backyards. I also curate and organise cultural events (e.g., Uroboros, Microbites of Innovation, Artwall Gallery). Portfolio: materie.me.
I am a design researcher with a background in HCI and Food Studies. My research reflects human-food practices as major drivers of climate change and investigates the role of creative design practices in supporting socially and ecologically sustainable futures. In my work, food functions as a widely relatable, aesthetically and sensory-rich design material and a starting point for critical hands-on thinking, making, and co-creative action. At Aalto, I am a postdoctoral research fellow at the CreaTures project (Creative Practices for Transformational Futures) and a member of ENCORE and INUSE research groups. I have co-founder several art and design research collectives, including Feeding Food Futures, ALTTAB, HotKarot, and Fermentation GutHub. I am always interested in collaborating with designers, researchers, artists, and broadly anyone interested in [food] sustainability issues and experiments. More at materie.me.
Before joining Aalto, I was a postdoctoral researcher at Jan Evangelista Purkyne University and a research fellow at Charles University (CZ). In 2018, I completed my doctorate in Interactive Media Design at the National University of Singapore, with a dissertation project Edible Speculations: Designing for Human-Food Interaction.
