Person profile

Maarit Salolainen is an experienced international design and textile professional. In addition to her professorship at the Aalto University, she works globally as a creative director and textile designer collaborating with major industrial partners. Salolainen's expertise is in the creative and technical knowledge of woven fabrics, jacquards, velvets, prints, embroideries and finishings in fabrics for interior use ranging from velvets and heavy upholstery to sheers. She manages seasonal collections both for the residential as well as for contract market from research and initial concept through technical and creative development to final quality decisions and color coordination. Salolainen's collaborations include working as creative director for the Turkish textile mill Vanelli, as well as the Mumbai based Indian mill G.M. Fabrics leading the team of 30 designers in developing new concepts, products and collections for international interior textile editors and brands as well as the in-house brands.

Maarit Salolainen was appointed as Professor for 3D Surface Design, especially textile materials in August 2013. The part time adjunct professorship enables Salolainen to continue her active professional work in the field in her various tasks in textile industry and business. Through Salolainen the Aalto University ARTS Department of Design gets a contemporary view and contact to the international field of textiles.

Maarit Salolainen on kansainvälinen ja monipuolinen muotoilu- ja tekstiilialan ammattilainen. Hän toimii taiteellisena johtajana ja mallistonhallintatehtävissä koti- ja ulkomaisissa tekstiilialan yrityksissä, taiteilijana, tekstiilisuunnittelijana ja muotoilijana oman studionsa kautta sekä professorina Aalto-yliopistossa. Tällä hetkellä Salolainen toimii turkkilaisen kangastehtaan Vanellin taiteellisena johtajana. Hän luotsaa 30 suunnittelijan tiimiä uusien konseptien, tuotteiden ja kokoelmien suunnittelussa kansainvälisille sisustuskangaseditoreille ja brändeille sekä tehtaan omalle kotimarkkinoille suunnatulle merkille.

Maarit Salolainen nimitettiin Aalto-yliopiston Taiteiden ja suunnittelun korkeakoulun Muotoilun laitokselle professoriksi elokuussa 2013. Professuurin ala on 3D pintasuunnittelu, erityisesti tekstiilimateriaalit. Adjunct professuuri on osa-aikainen ja mahdollistaa näin aktiivisen kentälla toimimisen kaupallisen ja teollisen tekstiilisuunnittelun tehtävissä. Salolaisen kautta Muotoilun laitos saa ajankohtaisen näkemyksen ja kontaktin tekstiilin kansainväliselle kentälle.

Background

Salolainen graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1992 with a major in Textile Art and Design. In the beginning of her career she worked as an artist and freelance textile designer in her studio in Düsseldorf, Germany and later Vienna, Austria. Her artistic work includes woven pieces, paintings, installations, and commissions for public spaces. Salolainen has been exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and art galleries. During her years as a freelance designer Salolainen worked with a network of textile companies and weaving mills in Europe. In 1999 she started to focus more on industrial and commercial textile design as well as collection and color coordinating, product portfolio management tasks and strategic design work. www.salolainen.fi

Maarit Salolainen started her professional career inside the textile industry in 2003 as the design director of Backhausen Interior Textiles, an internationally recognized Austrian jacquard mill. During her three years at Backhausen she was in a fortunate position to deepen her expertise in woven structures, materials, qualities of fabrics and collections, as well as technical requirements for residential and contract textiles. As the head of the design team, she was responsible for the research and development for the new products as well as for the design and coordination of the interior fabric collections under the Backhausen brand. In addition Salolainen was responsible for the conceptualization and design of international customer collections. Connections to high-end interior textile companies and textile editors in Europe, the U.S and Asia expanded Salolainen’s area of expertise. www.backhausen.com

In her subsequent position as design director for the Finnish interior textile editor Lauritzon’s. Maarit Salolainen developed the brand and visual profile of the company. Salolainen’s responsibilities included also the development of Lauritzon’s collections and the research, design and development of new fabrics together with leading textile mills in Europe and Asia. www.lauritzon.fi

From 2011 until 2015 Maarit Salolainen worked as the creative director of the Indian owned interior textile editor F&F Floor and Furnishings. Her responsibilities included the development of the brand and the visual profile of this growing company as well as strategic portfolio management, conceptualization and development of the collections and research, design and development of new qualities. The fabrics designed by Salolainen’s design team were developed and produced by textile mills in India, China and Europe. www.fandf.in

From autumn 2016 until summer 2018 Salolainen has worked as creative director for the Mumbai based Indian mill G.M. Fabrics leading theteam of 30 designers in devekiping new concepts, products and collections for international editors ad well as the in-house brand. Since Autumn 2018 Salolainen is working as a creative director at the Turkish textile mill Vanelli. http://www.vanelli.com.tr

Maarit Salolainen has also been working for the non-profit organization Alba Collective. The organization is engaged in projects for sustainable and ethical artisan production in India. As a creative director and design and textile advisor Salolainen has been involved in projects empowering artisan women and girls. www.albacollective.org

In her teaching career in different positions in design and textile area since 2003 Salolainen has gained insight into the challenges of education. In addition, coming from outside academia with a view and experience of the international textile field, has enabled her to view teaching anew. Her curriculum development, reorganization of the weaving and textile courses and research of teaching methods in weaving as brought innovative results and represent a major improvement at the department. Maarit Salolainen has actively opened the textile courses to fashion students and to students from other study programs of the Department of Design, worked as a supervisor for projects with industry and business as well as helped the students to network with international textile companies and ethical projects. Background

Maarit Salolainen valmistui Taideteollisesta korkeakoulusta vuonna 1992 taiteen maisteriksi pääaineenaan tekstiilitaide. Valmistumisen jälkeisinä vuosina hän työskenteli studiossaan Düsseldorfissa ja myöhemmin Wienissä vapaana taiteilijana. Taiteellinen tuotanto sisältää kudottuja töitä, maalauksia, installaatioita ja tilaustöitä julkisiin tiloihin. Teokset ovat olleet esillä lukuisissa kansainvälisissä yksityis- ja yhteisnäyttelyissä. Taiteellisen työnsä rinnalla Salolainen työskenteli suunnittelutoimistonsa kautta kansainvälisesti tekstiili- ja kuosisuunnittelijana sekä designkonsulttina, keskittyen vuodesta 1999 alkaen yhä enemmän kaupalliseen ja teolliseen tekstiilisuunnitteluun sekä mallistojen ja väritysten koordinointiin, tuoteportfolion hallintaan ja strategiseen suunnitteluun liittyviin tehtäviin. www.salolainen.fi

Vuosina 2003-2006 Maarit Salolainen toimi muotoilujohtajana itävaltalaisessa Backhausen Interior Textiles –kutomossa. Jacquard-kankaisiin erikoistunut Backhausen on tunnettu paloturvallisista julkisen tilan vaatimukset täyttävistä sisustuskankaistaan. Suunnitteluosaston johtajana Salolainen vastasi yrityksen tutkimuksesta ja tuotekehityksestä sekä Backhausen-brändin omien sisustuskangasmallistojen suunnittelusta ja koordinoinnista. Lisäksi hänen vastuullaan olivat asiakasmallistojen suunnittelu alan johtaville sisustuskangaseditoreille ja –yrityksille sekä huonekalutehtaille Euroopassa, USA:ssa ja Aasiassa. www.backhausen.com

Vuonna 2006 Salolainen siirtyi suomalaisen Lauritzon’s sisustustekstiiliyrityksen muotoilujohtajaksi. Hän kehitti yrityksen brändiä ja visuaalista ilmettä sekä vastasi yrityksen mallistonhallinnasta ja suunnittelu- sekä tuotekehitysyhteistyöstä johtavien Eurooppalaisten tekstiilitehtaiden kanssa. www.lauritzon.fi

Vuosina 2011-2015 alkaen Maarit Salolainen toimi intialaisomisteisen sisustuskangasyritys ja –editori F&F:n luovana johtajana. Hänen vastuullaan olivat voimakkaasti kasvavan yrityksen brändin ja visuaalisen ilmeen luominen, strateginen portfolion hallinta, mallistokonseptien luominen, sisustuskangasmallistojen kehittäminen, tutkimus ja tuotekehitys. Maarit Salolainen on yllä mainittujen tehtävien lisäksi työskennellyt kansalaisjärjestö Alba Collectiven tekstiili- ja muotoiluasiantuntijana Intiassa. Järjestö toimii kestävän kehityksen periaatteiden mukaisissa eettiseen käsiteolliseen tekstiilituotantoon liittyvissä projekteissa Intiassa, parantaen naisten ja tyttöjen asemaa kyläyhteisöissä. www.albacollective.org

Ammatillisella kentällä toimimisen lisäksi Maarit Salolainen on toiminut Aalto Yliopiston ARTS Muotoilun laitoksella Tekstiilitaiteen ja vaatetuksen koulutusohjelmissa tuntiopettajana vuodesta 2003, osa-aikaisena lehtorina vuodesta 2006 ja osa-aikaisena professorina vuodesta 2013. Salolainen on ollut tiiviisti mukana Muotoilun laitoksen kandidaatti- ja maisteritason ohjelmien tutkinnonuudistuksessa. Hän toimii jälleen Fashion and Collection Design maisteriohjelman suositun PatternLab-opintoprojektin vetäjänä. Vuosina 2003-2009 Salolainen kehitti brändin, opetussisällöt ja prosessin nykyiseen muotoonsa. www.patternlab.fi . Kansainväliseltä tekstiilin kentältä, akateemisen maailman ulkopuolelta tulevana, hän näki uudistustarpeet vakiintuneissa opetusmetodeissa. Salolainen on uudistanut tekstiili- ja kokoelmasuunnittelun sekä kudonnan opetuksen pedagogiikkaa, avannut tekstiiliopetusta laajemmin Muotoilun laitoksen eri koulutusohjelmien opiskelijoille, toiminut yritysyhteistyöprojektien vetäjänä ja auttanut opiskelijoita verkostoitumaan kansainväliseen tekstiiliteollisuuteen sekä kestävän kehityksen projekteihin. Hän on laajentanut materiaalipohjaisen muoti- ja vaatetussuunnittelun opetusta kudottuihin ja jacquard-kankaisiin sekä eri tekniikoita yhdistävien materiaalimallistojen suunnitteluun. Materiaalien ja tekstiilitekniikoiden innovatiivinen käyttö on saanut huomiota vaatetussuunnittelun opiskelijoiden viime vuosien kansainvälisten voittojen yhteydessä.
