My focus is mechatronics, energy efficiency, and intelligent systems. I strongly believe energy and environmental efficiency of many machines can be enhanced by improving their control and power transmission. Our research team is aiming at better energy efficiency and reduced life-cycle cost. The tools of our research are modern tools using digitalisation and industrial internet. Our team runs projects on digital twins, machine vision, and transportation.
I've focused in developing my teaching skills. I've had pedagogical courses and received pedagogical qualification (AmO, 60 cr professional teacher education). I've also given various mechatronics-related courses in Aalto University and an electric vehicle design course in IIT Guwahati, India.
I started with Aalto University in Aug 2015. I've been teaching Mechatronic Machine System Design and Mechanisms Basics courses during 2015-2016. In our new MSc programme, I'm responsible for two courses: Mechatronic Machine Design and Vehicle Mechatronics. I'm currently supervising four doctoral and about ten MSc theses.
I'm still drafting my reseach focus. A general descripion of my focus is mechatronics and energy efficiency. I strongly believe energy and environmental efficiency of many machines can be enhanced by improving their control and power transmission. I've earlier worked at VTT, Technical Research Centre of Finland, since autumn 2000. 2010-2015 I worked as research professor on eco-efficient machines (meaning life-cycle and energy efficiency). 2014-2015, I was research manager, responsible of jointly funded research portfolio in unit called Efficient Machines and Vehicles (about 140 persons).
I've specialized in electrical machines, dynamic phenomena in machines, smart machines, and their controls. My doctoral thesis (2007) was on active control of rotor vibrations using an electro-magnetic actuator. In 2008-2013, I led a team named Electrical Product Concepts (10…13 persons); we strengthened VTT's knowhow and established position on electrical machines and energy efficiency research.
In 2007-2008, I was as a visiting post-doc researcher at the North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC, USA) where I worked at Electro-mechanics research laboratory. Prior VTT, I worked for CERN, European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland as a master's thesis worker and research scientist (1997-2000).
I'm interested in mechatronics, electrical machines, hybrid energy systems, dynamic phenomena in machineries, and their control. Our research is aiming at better energy efficiency and reduced life-cycle cost. In addition to "hard research" topics, I've taken short courses and lead projects on product concept creation, innovation management, and leadership. I've lead public research projects as well as commissioning projects to companies up to volume about 1 M€.
Specialties and interests: mechatronics, electric machines, energy efficiency, dynamics, control, adaptive systems, new machine concepts, innovation management.
