Eero Vaara (Ph.D. Econ) is a Professor of Organization and Management at Aalto University School of Business, Helsinki, Finland. He is also the leader of the Future of Work Program (https://www.aalto.fi/future-of-work) and Strategy Work Program (strategywork.org).
He is a permanent Visiting Professor at EMLYON Business School, France, and a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Lancaster University, UK. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Copenhagen Business School, Hanken School of Economics, Jyväskylä University and Lappeenranta University of Technology. He has previously served as the Chair of European Group of Organizational Studies (EGOS) and as representative-at-large of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management. He is now a board member of the European Institute for Advanced Studies of Management (EIASM) and Scandinavian Consortium of Organizational Research (SCANCOR, Stanford and Harvard).
His research focuses on organizational and strategic change that he examines from discursive and narrative perspectives. This work deals with strategy process and practice research, studies of radical change such as mergers and acquisitions, work on institutional change and legitimation, research on multinational corporations and globalization, and historical analysis of management and organizations. His research has been published in leading journals such as Academy of Management Annals; Academy of Management Journal; Academy of Management Learning and Education; Academy of Management Review; British Journal of Management; Gender, Work and Organization; Human Relations; Journal of Business Venturing; Journal of International Business Studies; Journal of Management Inquiry; Journal of Management Studies; Organization; Organization Science; Organization Studies; Scandinavian Journal of Management; Strategic Management Journal; and Strategic Organization. He has also authored books and edited volumes (e.g., the Cambridge Handbook of Strategy as Practice 2010/2015, Language and Communication at Work: Discourse, Narrativity and Organizing 2014 and Visual and Multimodal Research in Organization and Management Studies 2019). He has received several awards for his contributions, including the first Roland Calori Prize for the Best Paper published in Organization Studies (2002) and the OMT Best Published Paper Award 2014 (with Joep Cornelissen and Saku Mantere). He has received an honorary doctorate from Estonian Business School, and he is a member of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters.
He is now serving as an Associate Editor of Academy of Management Journal. He is an editorial board member in Academy of Management Discoveries, Organization Studies, Organization, Scandinavian Journal of Management, Strategic Management Journal and Strategic Organization. He has also been a guest editor for special issues: SI on strategy and discourse in JMS in 2004, STF on communication, cognition and institutions in AMR in 2015, and SI on strategy process and practice research in SMJ (2018).
