Dr. Annamari Vänskä is Adjunct Professor of Fashion Research at the Department of Design. She is the Deputy PI of the research project Intimacy in Data-Driven Culture (IDA) and the PI of the research project Intimacy, Work and Design funded by the Strategic Research Council at the Academy of Finland (2019-2022 + 3 years).
Annamari Vänskä's research focuses on fashion and visual culture, particularly on fashion media, fashion advertising and fashion curating from the perspective of gender studies, queer theory and posthumanism. She has two Titles of Docent. Her work develops and explores qualitative methods of research and analysis. She has held several research positions nationally and internationally: Collegium Researcher (Turku Institute for Advanced Studies, 2014–2016), Forskarassistent (Centre for Fashion Studies, Stockholm University, 2010–2013), and Researcher (Department of Art History, Helsinki University, 2002–2007). She has been Visiting Professor (SCF – Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation, China, 2017–2018), Visiting Fellow (Central Saint Martins, London 2012 and Parsons School of Design, New York, 2010), Visiting Postdoctoral Researcher (Centre for Fashion Studies, Stockholm, 2009) and Visiting PhD-researcher (jointly at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and Centre for Cultural Analysis, Theory and History, University of Leeds, 2003). She has published 9 authored and edited peer-reviewed volumes, 36 peer-reviewed articles and over 150 scientific, professional and popular articles, curatorial texts and columns. She been awarded e.g. with “Docent of the Year” title for research, teaching and societal impact (2013) and “Scientific Book of the Year Honorary Mention” (2013) for her monograph Muodikas lapsuus (2012). Part of her academic work is curating exhibitions, and she has curated 21 exhibitions in art and fashion in 2003–2018.

Annamari Vänskä's research focuses on fashion, visual and digital culture and art, particularly on fashion media, fashion advertising, fashion influencers, data-driven fashion and fashion curating. Her expertise is especially in gender studies, queer theory, race and ethnicity studies and she has two Titles of Docent, one in Art History and Gender Studies (University of Helsinki) and one in Fashion Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies and Art History (University of Turku). Her work combines and develops and critically explores qualitative methods of research and analysis, especially queer reading practices. Vänskä has held several research and teaching positions nationally and internationally. She has worked as Collegium Researcher at the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (2014–2016), as Forskarassistent (Associate Professor) at the Centre for Fashion Studies at Stockholm University (2010–2013) and as Researcher at the Department of Art History at the University of Helsinki (2002–2007). She has also worked as Visiting Professor at SCF – Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation, Shanghai, China (2017–2018), Visiting Fellow at Central Saint Martins, London (2012), Visiting Fellow at Parsons School of Design, New York (2010), Visiting postdoctoral researcher at Centre for Fashion Studies, Stockholm (2009) and as Visiting PhD-researcher jointly at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and Centre for Cultural Analysis, Theory and History, University of Leeds (2003). She has published 9 authored and edited peer-reviewed volumes, 36 peer-reviewed articles and over 150 scientific, professional and popular articles and columns. An integral part of Vänskä's academic work is curating, and she has curated over 20 exhibitions in art and fashion in Finland and internationally between 2003–2018.
